On Black Bloc Anarchists …

To the Editor:

I agree with Chris Hedge’s critique of the anarchist black bloc, but I would add that Occupy’s lack of clear demands and loose consensus‑based structure makes it easier for small organized groups to hijack the movement. A better defined program and actions with more structure ‑ including easily identified monitors ‑ would help the public distinguish Occupy, its goals and its organization from the minority of violent protestors.

To the Editor:

Calling oneself an anarchist does not make it so. Anarchism (whether one agrees with it or not) is a legitimate political theory and, some would argue, the highest form of democracy. Mindless violence is not anarchy and anarchy is not the same as chaos. The black clad hooligans are not anarchists; they are hooligans. The Occupy movement needs to stand up and distance itself from the black clad hooligans.
