Do the town on the cheap. I will tell you how.
See Shelly Mitchell in “Talking with Angels”, the one-woman theatrical adaptation of Gritta Mallasz’s best-selling book. Opens Nov. 10, thru Dec. 5 at Theater Artaud. Regular price — $27 to $35. We found this: $18 Rush tix available _ hour before performances. Here’s what the New York Theatre Wire sez: “Shelley Mitchell, a sublime actress – is radiant, beautiful and soulful.
Here’s a find: The New Century Chamber Orchestra will perform “Russian Treasures” that includes the works of Tchiakovsky, Tavener and Arensky, at the Florence Gould theatre in the Legion of Honor. Reg. Price $16 – 29.00 – but if you go to goldstarevents.com.the tix are Free – $14.50. That’s Thursday, Nov. 18 @8pm. Buzz right along – but you can leave your violin at home.
On Saturday, Nov. 27 – BITCH (formerly of Bitch and Animal) will play El Rio W/Mutilated Mannequins and Dear Nora. Of course you must be 21+. This show is definitely not for Teeny Boppers. So, dig down in those jeans and scrap together $7. They call “Bitch” the Indie-music goddess, among other things. As if you didn’t know – BITCH comes complete with an electric violin, a ukulele and bass. With this new band and a fistful of politically charged songs and her wildly dramatic stage persona – she gives new meaning to inspired activism. Let’s hear it for the BITCH!
Everyone’s favorite nasty houseguest is back to ruin your White Christmas. And Theatre Rhino has invited the bastard back. The Man Who Came To Dinner will star P.A. Cooley as Sheridan Whiteside – The Houseguest you’d like to smother. The show was written in 1939 and is still running after all these years all over the country. Even I play “The Man” in Denver when I was barely twenty. Now, what kind of madness was that? Yes, I was nasty then and still am. The show opens on Dec. 9 and will run thru Jan 9, 2005. Gee – 2005 is that close? The previews are Dec. 9 & 20, 11. Check preview prices at the Theater 861-5079 or look at the Half Price Tix board at Union Square. To appreciate and encourage non-gay theater patrons to Theatre Rhino that over a “Straight Night Out” for each show of its season which includes a wine and cheese reception following the show. It is scheduled for the first Thursday performance after each opening. It’s Queer Theater for the Straight guy and gal.
Extended..again! Addicted, the energetic comedy at the Marines Memorial will now run thru Nov. 28. Here’s a new extra feature: Special! Q & A sessions following every Sunday performance. Not only is this show High Octane – it’s High Testosterone. Reg. Price $25 – $40. But it wouldn’t hurt to visit the Half-Price tix booth in Union Square. You never no what you will see. Maybe even the star Mark Lundholm might be lurking around having a coffee (another Addiction.)
Holiday’s just wouldn’t be the same without the Kinky, Bizarre “Kinsey Sicks”. They will be back on Nov. 26 with the return of the “Kinsey Sicks: Oy Vey In a Manger.” This show is not for you if you are a religious nut.
After all – the “Sicks” are over-the-top drags in their annual effort to stamp out holiday cheer. They will also premiere new songs and other holiday mischief not in last year’s production. I turned down the role of the baby Jesus. I had other commitments. Get in the preview price on Nev. 24 at 8pm by calling the New Conservatory Theatre Box Office 861-8972.
Here is more cheap fun. Every Monday at the Purple Onion .yes, that legendary Purple Onion is Open Mic at 7pm, hosted by the Kitchenettes Lua Hadar & Linda Kosut in collaboration with musical director, Barry Lloyd. And here’s the best news $5 cover. Wow! The Purple is located at 140 Columbus. Now get out and do something – it’s the season. In this case – it’s the “Cheap Season”. Or, if you prefer – a cheap date.
LEE HARTGRAVE’S FLICKER BITS:
TESTOSTERONE: Falling in love is so hard to do. And losing that love can also be dangerous. Forget the hyped nude scene of Antonio Sabato Jr. If it was on the screen – it must of happened when I dipped into my popcorn. Still – interesting little diversion. The movie that is – not Sabato. Get your mind out of the cutter! Rating: Three Boxes of Popcorn.
THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES: What’s all the fuss about? A motorcycle falls over. Not once, but twice. That’s about it. This is a traveled road that is not all that interesting. RATING: ONE BOX OF POPCORN.
BEING JULIA: Best bet! Intriguing, beguiling performance by Annette Benning in this backstage Theater drama. It’s a terrific flick. RATING: FOUR BOXES OF POPCORN.
