Tenants scored a victory yesterday after the Board of Supervisors agreed to include two significant amendments to legislation introducing seniority into the condo conversion process. The legislation, sponsored by Supervisor Bevan Dufty, raised alarm among tenant advocates due to the possibility that by guaranteeing condo conversions to anyone with a Tenancy-in-Common (TIC), it would increase the number of evictions used to obtain TICs. The amendments, introduced by Supervisor Jake McGoldrick, will cause the legislation to end after one year, and prevents any condo conversions from occurring in which a senior, disabled or catastrophically ill tenant was evicted. Because of the substantive nature of these amendments, the Board sent the legislation back to the Land Use Committee, where it will be heard again in the coming weeks.
