Dear Editor,
Thank you for Eri Hillyer’s story (22.SEP.05) making a record of British MP George Galloway’s historic visit to San Francisco yesterday which was honored by a majority of City Supervisors. Had you not published his story, how would one even begin to know that Galloway even came here– or culminated his visit with a rousing speech at Mission High School?
Neither of San Francisco’s major newspapers, The San Francisco Chronicle, or the San Francisco Examiner mentioned the visit by the man who shook the halls of Congress and the future political aspirations of Senator Norm Coleman (R-MN) when he last visited America in May. The San Jose Mercury also did not report his presence here (although it mentioned that Galloway was touring the United States) in part to promote his book, Mr. Galloway Goes to Washington, and also to assist the broader anti-war effort that should (with others including Cindy Sheehan) elicit large nationwide rallies this coming Saturday.
Hardly a day goes by in which the major newspapers don’t decry the public’s growing reliance on internet news outside of the mainstream– why? Could it be because news sources such as BeyondChron or Indybay.org seek to fill the memory hole that the corporate media desperately digs on behalf of their own vested interests?
Without good and timely information, the public has no tools with which to act responsibly, and no true democracy can exist. Why then should those who rely on the corporate media for news be surprised anymore that elections are stolen, that potential Supreme Court nominees can play dummy and still be confirmed, and that costly and outlaw wars can be pursued on the basis of a wink and a nod?
