A standing applause to The Chronicle for finally echoing Beyond Chron’s May 24 piece about the Post Office’s refusal to provide individual mail delivery to single room occupancy hotels. Although belated, the editorial (“Second-class Mail”) in the June 16 issue of the paper demonstrates at least a willingness to acknowledge some of the problems plaguing one of the city’s most underrepresented and often ignored sectors.
Three weeks ago, Beyond Chron ran a story by Lorraine Sanders breaking the news of the SRO mail problem. After The Examiner picked up our story on June 3, Mayor Gavin Newsom promptly responded by saying there was “no excuse” for the Post Office practice. Now, weeks after Beyond Chron broke the story, The Chronicle is picking up the issue, as well.
Even though the first two paragraphs of The Chronicle’s editorial plagiarize Sanders’ story nearly verbatim, it’s always good to see the daily print media run with our investigative pieces. We would like this to happen more often.
Finally, major media outlets are taking note of the Voice of the Rest. If the SRO mail story is any indicator, this voice is not at all being co-opted but, rather, listened to with a newfound respect.
