A Question For Die Hard 49er Fans

by Randy Shaw on September 11, 2006

Media coverage of yesterday’s 49er game trumpeted the team’s loss as a “moral victory” and a “big step forward.” I need some help here. As a lifelong Chicago Bears fan (note to parents: never let your child pick their favorite team based on the animal they like best), I do not pretend to understand the 49er fan psyche. But as someone who attended the Super Bowl parades down Market Street, and felt the Walsh-Montana-Rice 49ers were as good as it has ever gotten, I need to know: have fortunes really fallen that low that fans are cheered by a 7-point loss to the lowly Arizona Cardinals? Is this what living under George W. Bush has done to your expectations? Send responses for publication to rshaw@beyondchron.org
