While Jake Schneider’s article on the Supes postponement of the Bayview-Hunters Point Redevelopment decision was a good one, I really wish folks would stop saying that the PAC for this project was elected. It may have been elected originally, but while at these hearings at City Hall, I heard so many times from Bayview residents that they either were never informed of a PAC election, or that a PAC member would choose their replacement when they left, or that the replacement was actually appointed by the RDA. What kind of PAC is this? And yesterday I heard so many folks say that it was going to go ahead anyway so they might as well go along with it. That is a defeatist attitude which makes it even easier for the all too powerful RDA to eat up another neighborhood.
In the words of Otto Duffy regarding the RDA Director, “Has she promised us a Rosen Garden?”

In “Kite Bummer,” appearing May 3, 2006, Irvin Muchnick mentions that the success of The Kite Runner owes something to “a Heart of Darkness setting,” and then goes on to mention that “It is simply not believable
to me that such a novel could have been written in its entirety by someone who knew no English prior to moving to the United States in 1980 at age 15.” This is ironic considering that Joseph Conrad learned English as an adult and then wrote Heart of Darkness, only one of a lifetime’s worth of stylistically complex novels.
