Oaklanders for Affordable Housing announced plans yesterday to gather signatures to put an affordable housing measure on the November 2006 ballot. This measure will require all developers to include a percentage of units that are affordable to the working families in Oakland. A recent poll found that Oakland voters overwhelmingly support the measure. Over 100 cities in California have inclusionary housing policies, with Oakland the only major city in the Bay Area that does not. ACORN will invite congregations, agencies, unions, organizations and civic and political leaders to join in this effort to build housing that will preserve the diversity of Oakland. As ACORN member Eve. Purvis put it, “As a member of ACORN, the community feels that we have to do better, all of us, developers, bankers, mortgage lenders, real-estate industry, this is your call to make a difference.”
