Walker Annihilates Workers’ Rights

by Paul Hogarth on March 10, 2011

After lying for weeks that declaring war on working people was about “the budget,” Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and the Republican State Senate pulled the trigger last night – by stripping all fiscal provisions from their anti-union legislation. This maneuver allowed the Senate to pass the bill without a 3/5 quorum present – while 14 Democratic State Senators have bravely refused to come vote, hiding out across the Illinois border – thus now making it illegal for Wisconsin state employees to have a union. Republicans did this, at a time when polls show Scott Walker’s approval numbers tanking – and a solid majority of Americans oppose his assault on teachers, nurses and other state employees. The Wisconsin Democratic Party is now leading an effort to recall Republican State Senators (I personally gave $100 to the effort last night, you should too) and this latest move will have national implications. As Joseph Welch famously said to another Wisconsin Republican back in 1954: “Have you no decency, sir?”
