Subject: Signs Matter For Students’ Health

Ms. Woldow clearly explains and illustrates the power of advertising in promoting healthy meals.  As a public health nutritionist we decry the way that foods of poor quality are promoted and advertised, yet seem to have amnesia when promoting the behaviors we want to reinforce.  The medium is the message as Marshal McLuhan said many years ago.  We need to use all the tools at our disposal to make choosing and eating healthy foods understandable and appealing.

I would encourage the SFUSD to consider using the tools that others have developed and found helpful as a first step to influencing student food selection and eating behavior and then once they assess if these come up short then continue to develop materials that meet any gaps these pre-existing materials may have such as language, culturally appropriate food choices, etc.  It would be hoped that a broad representation of students, faculty and staff get to provide input on this process too.

Thank you Ms. Woldow for helping to support the health and wellbeing of children in the SFUSD.
