You are correct that the money behind most pension cutting / pension reform efforts comes from right wing donors. However, you are wrong to portray Chuck Reed and other advocates of pension reform as puppets. Retirement benefits reform is desperately needed for most local governments and the state of California. We need to re-set salaries and retirement benefits to be fair to workers and sustainable for the tax paying public. Otherwise, we won’t be able to attract well qualified government employees or provide the levels of govt services the public needs. Substituting overly generous retirement benefits for appropriate wages may be politically painless in the moment, but it is fiscally irresponsible and attracts the wrong kind of employees for a dynamic workplace.h The public will get on board with the right kinds of reform, once it sees the dearth of services occurring.
