To the Editor…

Thanks to Dana Woldow for bringing up the problem with Coke and other sugary, non-nutritive drinks being a cause of obesity in this country. The worst part of the story is that our tax dollars often pay for that soda. So our tax dollars are paying for people to get obese and get diabetes, which has led, in part, to the skyrocketing cost of healthcare in the US. When we had our second child (and lost my second income) we were not poor enough for food stamps. We did qualify for the WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program. The purchases I made with WIC were for nutritionally dense foods; whole grains, eggs, cheese, milk, fruit juices. They added nutrition to our family’s diet. I think SNAP (food stamps) should be replaced with the WIC program or something like it. But it won’t because of the stranglehold corporations like Coke have on our government. And that, dear people, is our fault, because we let it happen.
