Sunday Streets in Tenderloin/Civic Center on August 14

by Randy Shaw on August 10, 2011

This Sunday offers a unique opportunity to walk the streets of the Tenderloin and Civic Center without cars and buses, and to enjoy the area’s historic architecture. While the 2010 Sunday Streets event bypassed most of the Tenderloin and was hurt by rain, this Sunday’s route includes Ellis, Jones and O’Farrell Streets. This brings in such local landmarks as the Tenderloin National Forest and the historically restored Hamilton Hotel (where Vivian Vance, Florence Henderson and Lauren Bacall once lived). A map of the Sunday Streets route is available here. Those coming Sunday can pick up walking maps identifying buildings, restaurants and bars of the historic Geary and O’Farrell corridor in the Uptown Tenderloin Historic District at a table at the corner of O’Farrell and Jones Streets. The walking map can also be downloaded from uptowntl.org.
