“Pearl Fishers”

by on June 29, 2005

Dear Buzz Hartgrove:

Your review of the Pearl Fishers was spot on! My immediate reaction, after recovering from the stunning opening duet, was “this is way psychedelic, what fun.” The pop art palms, gyrating dancers and my personal favorite, maidens tossing rose petals(?) on the virginal bed, made for great visuals. At the same time the music was great and the performances very strong. I too was pleasantly surprised at the wonderful voices in this summer production. I was thinking that it would be a great opera to bring kids to, as an introduction. The story is simple and silly and could make for some hilarious goofing. Thanks for the refreshing, non-elitist review.
