Nonprofit Acquires Rights to Berkeley Iceland

Seven months after the historic Berkeley Iceland was saved from the wrecking ball by a 5-4 City Council vote, the Save Berkeley Iceland organization has entered into a contract to purchase the building. The group must now raise $12 million to purchase, restore, improve, and operate Berkeley’s legendary ice palace. The battle to prevent Berkeley’s Iceland’s replacement by condominiums galvanized the city, and gave many young people their first activist experience.
