To the Editor:
This book review convinced me to read the book. I also lived in Chicago during a very racist period and know some of the history. I was unaware of this story, and it is very heartening to read of people coming together and winning a victory under such difficult circumstances. There are lessons for today in this book. Not only does the story of Hickman as an individual sound incredibly interesting, but also the social and economic conditions in which African Americans lived. The story of his defense committee is fabulous in terms of what they were able to do in the face of murder charges in a period that was extremely conservative. Thank you for publishing this fascinating review. Can’t wait to get hold of the book.
