The Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club endorsed progressive mayoral candidate Quintin Mecke last night at its general membership meeting. The Club held a run-off between Mecke and incumbent Mayor Gavin Newsom, who had met with members to seek an endorsement, after no candidate got the necessary 60% at last month’s meeting.
While Newsom is overwhelmingly favored to win re-election, Mecke’s campaign in the past few weeks has deprived the Mayor of several club endorsements. The Sunset Democratic Club and the San Francisco Young Democrats both deadlocked and did “no endorsement” for the Mayor’s race, and San Francisco for Democracy (the local affiliate of Democracy for America) endorsed Mecke. “The Milk Club has always been the standard bearer for progressives,” said Mecke, “and I’m honored to have their endorsement.”
