In 11 days, Mainers will vote on whether to veto the state’s new same-sex marriage law. Polls show the race dead even, and beating Question 1 would have national implications. If you can’t travel to Maine, join a local phone-bank this weekend for “No on 1” in the Bay Area. Equality California, the Courage Campaign and the SF Democratic Party are running one in San Francisco. Volunteers are meeting at Equality California (2370 Market Street) on Saturday and Sunday from 11-3. In the East Bay, Courage Campaign and Cal Berkeley Democrats are meeting on Saturday from 12 to 4 in Eshelman Hall at UC Berkeley — and on Sunday at 2539 Monarch Place in Union City. You can also phone from home through Call for Equality. Of course, Bay Areans are involved on both sides of this fight. The “Yes on 1” ads (which are nearly identical to last year’s “Yes on 8” ads) are produced by Criswell & Associates, a firm located at 58 Maiden Lane – in Union Square. But as the SF Appeal reports, recent filings by the Maine Ethics Commission show a deliberate effort on their part to hide the company’s identity.
