HUNGER caused me to stop next door in the elite 1300 Restaurant where members of the BAYARD RUSTIN LGBT Coalition celebrated the CENTENNIAL Birthday of Bayard at 100! Born March 17, 1912. Rustin, an African American, was an American leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, pacifism and nonviolence, and gay rights. A civil rights “LION” SHUNNED by some Blacks, when it became known he was gay, had public discomfort with his sexual orientation.
In the 1970s, Rustin became a public advocate on behalf of gay and lesbian causes. In 1972, a group of San Francisco Bay Area activist, with the permission of the Estate of Bayard Rustin, formed the coalition.
I observed the occasion from my seat at the corner of the bar, No. 10, where I always sit to watch the action. Indeed, a joyous occasion – light hors d’eouvres and libations served and a Birthday cake! . Acquainted with co- Chairs, JOSHUA SMITH and SUSAN CHRISTIAN. Also on the scene, members LISA WILLIAMS (Girl, your hairstyle was sharp!), LAWRENCE SHINE, ANDREA SHORTER (proudly introduced me to her LOVELY mom, visiting from San Diego).
HEADS UP – Members were voting that evening for their choice for Grand Marshall for the upcoming San Francisco PRIDE Parade. Polling open until March 31. For more information, check @www.sfpride.org.
