“I Heard That:” 49ers Got Game!

by Rochelle Metcalfe on November 17, 2010

Last Sunday afternoon was GORGEOUS at the ‘STICK! The weather hot, fans upbeat as usual, and The San Francisco 49ers beat the St. Louis RAMS in overtime, 23-20! GOOD NEWS! Finally, the 49ers have a NEW starting quarterback! 2006 Heisman Trophy winner TROY SMITH, the 49ers FIRST EVER BLACK starting QB, has been the conduit for changing the team’s attitude! Sunday he threw for 356 yards, one touchdown, and ran for 12 yards without being intercepted. Smith GOT GAME! The 49ers have a STAR on the rising! October 31, Troy Smith debuted in London, England against the Denver Broncos – stunning win!

QB ALEX SMITH was the starter, much to the disappointment of FAITHFUL Niners like myself, because at times he wasn’t sure of himself, scared to come out of the pocket; he couldn’t get it together to lead the team to the next level – WIN! Play-off! The season wasn’t going anywhere; Hopes dashed! Stuck on Alex, Head Coach MICHAEL SINGLETARY had not expected the change of events! Due to a separated shoulder, injured at Carolina Panthers game (Oct. 24), Smith has been unable to play, sitting on the sidelines. What a predicament for Singletary! And how Troy Smith got the starting job!

Check it out, 49ers signed Troy Smith in September, but did not play – a hidden treasure, that would stun Singletary and the rest!!! STILL learning the Niners Play Book, playing his own gut-feeling game!!! 6 ft., trim 217 lb., agile, has a good throwing arm, cool in the pocket, but will come out to do his thing!

Was it DESTINY??? Coach Singletary must have prayed, holding the cross he wears, visible for all to see, to ask God to send him a QB – no doubt, TO SAVE HIS JOB!!! Until London, 8th week in the season , the team won one game – Monday Night Football (Sept. 20) against the New Orleans Saints that gave us hope! Alex Smith, at times unsure of himself, was not making things happen! Coach was frustrated; and of course the fans!

Prior to Troy coming on the scene, fans raved for Singletary to play third string QB NATE DAVIS who has a good throwing arm, but his play, NOT to Singletary’s satisfaction (my score for him, he’s TOO emotional, yells, ranting to referees; dressed down poor Alex Smith in front of the sporting world seen on national TV; felt bad for Alex).

Ah, fans like myself had so much hope for Alex, and the season, hoping we would win our DIVISION, and a play-off berth; cheered last season when Singletary was hired as head coach. A bad start this season – losing games, bottom of division, now won three game. Troy Smith has given us hope! Under his leadership, super running back FRANK GORE stated “it’s like playing football in the park!” FUN!

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL- Philadelphia Eagles starting QUARTERBACK MICHAEL VICK, BACK WITH A VENGEANCE, but humble, made football history with his dazzling plays, crushing the Washington Redskins 59-28! What a game!!! …

LEST WE FORGET … THE JONESTOWN MASSACRE, November 18, 1978!

HEY, IT’S NICE TO BE NICE AND TO ALL OF YOU OUT THERE … LOOK FOR ME … I’LL BE THERE …
