New construction is exempt from rent control and every rent controlled unit lost is lost forever-demolitions are being used to steadily eat away at rent control. Buildings-like the 377 units at Trinity Plaza-are demolished and rebuilt-but the 377 rent controlled units are lost and the replacement units are expensive market rate units. If we don’t close this loophole, we’ll eventually have few units covered by rent control. In 2004, over 500 units are slated for such demolitions-500 evictions and 500 lost units!
We need to get the measure prohibiting demolition of rent controlled units on the ballot and we need your help to collect the 20,000 signatures needed by July 5!
Please come to the signature gathering mobilization: this Saturday, May 15, 10 AM at SF Tenants Union, 558 Capp St (at 21st). We’ll have coffee and donuts, give you materials and a brief orientation and send you out to get signatures at key locations.
