To the Editors:
Randy,You too fail to provide a plausible connection for your assertion that banning condo conversions will halt this type of speculative behavior. Have you forgotten that using the Ellis Act to evict tenants already disqualifies a building from condo conversion eligibility? Were San Francisco to focus its rent subsidies on those that need it most, such as the subjects of your article, this situation would not exist. Instead we have a failed system that ignores rational economic conclusions, that provides financial benefit to many that don’t require it, and that retards healthy rental unit turnover. We could do much better.
