And the Chronicle’s Fetish with Republicans Continues …

by Paul Hogarth on March 20, 2012

For years, I have documented how the San Francisco Chronicle – and Carla Marinucci in particular – loves to report on Republican politics in California, even while the state gets bluer every year and the state GOP becomes further marginalized as an extremist freakshow. But yesterday, Carla even outdid herself – with an SF Chronicle report on Page A1 about Republican candidates in San Francisco. In a city where George W. Bush failed to win a single precinct (in both elections), any GOP candidate running against Nancy Pelosi, Mark Leno or Tom Ammiano doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hell. Even Cindy Sheehan in 2008 got nearly twice the number of votes as Pelosi’s Republican opponent. While the media should cover candidates whose names will be on the ballot, it’s hard to imagine another major paper of record giving front-page treatment to such a group of perennial losers. But when it comes to the Chronicle’s fetish with Republicans, hope springs eternal.
