A Sign of Muni’s Decline

by Paul Hogarth on August 2, 2010

San Francisco has been hit badly by Muni service cuts – which went down to about 10% a few months ago. Recent talks between the Board of Supervisors and the MTA suggest that some cuts will be restored, but for now Muni riders are suffering — and I learned the hard way on Sunday afternoon how bad things have gone. When I arrived at a bus stop to take the 47-Van Ness, the Next Bus feature said it was coming in five minutes – so I decided to wait. Five minutes later, the bus zoomed right by my stop because it was overcrowded. So I look up on my iPhone to see when the next bus is coming, and the results show: “30 minutes, 30 minutes & 32 minutes.” Needless to say, I had to walk to Trader Joe’s. And calling 311 to complain is not an attractive choice, given that the MTA gets charged for each Muni-related call.
