DENVER DISPATCH: Media Exaggerates Protest, Dissent in Denver

by Randy Shaw on August 25, 2008

DENVER 10:30 A.M.: Today’s Denver Post featured huge front page photo of a protest—with a subhead then noting that while organizers predicted 20,000, less than 1000 showed. Know how the media used to deflate protest crowds by citing the warm weather (rather than the cause) for folks taking to the streets? ThePost explained the low turnout by saying the weather might have been too nice—rather than relegating the story to the inside pages and concluding that few activists see value in protesting Barack Obama. More protests are planned for today and the rest of the week, but with nice weather continuing, the organizers’ hope to “Recreate 68” appears delusional.
